Summary

X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) can cause significantly reduced salivary function. Routine salivary tests in HED patients are recommended to protect oral health.

Background:

  • Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) comprise over 100 disorders affecting ectodermal tissues.
  • X-linked hypohidrotic ED (HED) is the most prevalent form, impacting hair, teeth, and sweat glands.
  • Previous reports suggest a link between HED and diminished salivary function.

Observation:

  • A 38-year-old male with HED presented with markedly reduced salivary fluid and acidic proline-rich protein production.
  • Computed tomography revealed hypoplasia of one submandibular and both parotid glands.
  • The right submandibular gland appeared to be absent in the patient.

Findings:

  • The observed salivary gland abnormalities in the HED patient indicate a broader developmental disturbance.
