Summary

Measuring tear immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels can help diagnose allergic conjunctivitis. Elevated tear IgE concentrations were observed in patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, perennial allergic conjunctivitis, and vernal keratoconjunctivitis compared to controls.

Background:

  • Tear immunoglobulin E (IgE) is implicated in allergic conjunctivitis pathogenesis.
  • Locally produced IgE significantly contributes to allergic conjunctivitis severity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate tear IgE concentrations in various types of conjunctivitis.
  • To assess the diagnostic utility of tear IgE levels for allergic conjunctivitis.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 113 allergic conjunctivitis patients (SAC, PAC, VKC), 14 bacterial conjunctivitis (BC), 13 epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC), and 18 controls.
  • Collected tear samples using microcapillary method.
  • Quantified tear IgE levels via immunoenzyme assay.

Main Results:

  • Significantly elevated tear IgE in VKC (322.2 ng/ml), SAC (194.7 ng/ml), and PAC (134.8 ng/ml) versus controls (52.1 ng/ml).
  • No significant difference in tear IgE between EKC (97.2 ng/ml), BC (92.6 ng/ml), and controls.
  • p < 0.01 for allergic conjunctivitis groups compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • Tear IgE concentrations are significantly increased in allergic conjunctivitis patients.
  • Measuring tear IgE is a potential diagnostic tool for allergic conjunctivitis.
