Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Imaging
  • Prosthetics

Background:

  • Assessing prosthetic fit is crucial for amputee comfort and function.
  • Existing methods struggle to accurately quantify subtle soft tissue deformation in residual limbs.

Observation:

  • Spiral X-ray computed tomography (CT) acquired 3D data of below-knee residual limbs and prostheses.
  • A novel sum projection depth-shaded cylindrical mapping technique was developed.
  • Small lead markers on the skin surface tracked soft tissue displacement.

Findings:

  • The developed technique achieved 1mm precision and 2mm accuracy in measuring skin surface deformation.
  • Significant skin surface deformation (≥7mm) was detected between scans with prostheses in situ.
  • Displacement measurements averaged 15mm or less.

Implications:

  • This imaging-based approach offers a feasible method for measuring and visualizing residual limb shape changes.
  • Improved prosthetic fit assessment can lead to enhanced prosthetic device design and patient outcomes.
  • The technique can detect shape changes as small as 30mm.
