Single application mitomycin C in primary pterygium surgery

To evaluate surgical results, especially recurrence rate, and to register complications in patients treated for primary pterygium.

Nineteen eyes treated with local excision and single application of Mitomycin C 0.3 mg/ml for 5 minutes. Pre and postoperative astigmatism was evaluated by automatic keratometry. Follow-up after one year.

Corneal recurrence was observed in one patient and limbal recurrence was seen in another, a total rate of 11%. Astigmatism was reduced. No complications were encountered.

The procedure is simple, with a low recurrence rate, and has not shown complications.
