Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify common bacterial isolates from burn wounds.
  • To determine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns (antibiograms) of these isolates.
  • To inform antimicrobial drug policies for burn patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of pus samples from burn patients.
  • Collected samples over a 5-year period (June 1993-June 1997).
  • Identified bacterial isolates and performed antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Main Results:

  • 920 bacterial isolates were identified from 600 samples.
  • Pseudomonas spp. (36%) was the most prevalent isolate, followed by Staphylococcus aureus (19%).
  • Vancomycin showed 100% effectiveness against Gram-positive organisms. Pseudomonas spp. was susceptible to ceftazidime (83%) and cefoperazone (82%).

Conclusions:

  • Burn wound infections are frequently polymicrobial.
  • Antimicrobial resistance is a significant concern in burn care.
  • Hospital-specific antibiotic policies are crucial for effective management of burn wound infections.
