Summary

A new hydrocortisone mouthwash offers an easier way to treat oral mucosal conditions like aphthous ulcers and lichen planus. This aqueous solution showed significant patient improvement in a clinical study, providing a viable alternative to topical steroid creams.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of an aqueous hydrocortisone mouthwash for treating oral mucosal lesions.
  • To provide a more patient-friendly alternative for topical steroid delivery to the oral mucosa.

Main Methods:

  • An aqueous solution containing hydrocortisone (0.3% w/v) and 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (4.5% w/v) was formulated.
  • Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (0.5% w/v) was incorporated to enhance viscosity and stabilize the hydrocortisone-cyclodextrin complex.
