Background:

  • Behçet's disease (BD) can cause significant vision loss.
  • Elevated soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) is linked to idiopathic uveoretinitis relapse and BD.
  • This study investigates sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1 in Palestinian BD patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1 levels in Behçet's disease patients.
  • To correlate these levels with ocular and systemic disease activity.
  • To assess the impact of immunosuppressive treatment on these markers.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 51 Behçet's disease patients and 53 healthy controls.
  • Assessed disease activity via clinical history and ocular examination.
  • Measured peripheral venous sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1 using ELISA.

Main Results:

  • Both sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1 were significantly lower in patients receiving systemic immunosuppression.
  • Off treatment, sICAM-1 was higher in patients with active systemic disease but inactive eyes.
  • sVCAM-1 levels were not elevated in any patient group compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • Systemic immunosuppression reduces sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1 levels in BD patients.
  • Elevated sICAM-1 suggests endothelial activation in active Behçet's disease.
  • sICAM-1 levels correlate with inflammatory activity in BD, including ocular involvement.
