Summary

Laser treatment for congenital nevi can cause pseudo-melanoma, a condition mimicking malignant melanoma. Recognizing this laser therapy complication prevents unnecessary excisions and ensures accurate diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Laser Medicine

Background:

  • Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are benign skin growths.
  • CO2 laser therapy is used for CMN treatment.
  • Accurate diagnosis of pigmented lesions is crucial.

Observation:

  • A patient treated for CMN with CO2 laser developed a repigmented lesion.
  • The lesion was excised due to suspicion of malignancy.
  • Histological re-evaluation revised the diagnosis.

Findings:

  • The excised lesion was diagnosed as pseudo-melanoma, not malignant melanoma.
  • Pseudo-melanoma is a potential complication of CO2 laser therapy.
  • Histological features can be misleading post-laser treatment.

Implications:

  • Clinicians must be aware of pseudo-melanoma as a laser therapy complication.
  • This awareness can prevent unnecessary surgical procedures for benign lesions.
  • Accurate diagnosis requires careful consideration of patient history and treatment modality.
