Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Nutritional Science
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Anorexia nervosa is a severe eating disorder with numerous medical complications.
  • Hypercholesterolemia and hypercarotenemia are poorly understood complications associated with anorexia nervosa.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure fasting cholesterol and beta-carotene levels in patients with moderately severe anorexia nervosa.
  • To investigate the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia and hypercarotenemia in anorexia nervosa.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed 23 female patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for anorexia nervosa.
  • Determined lipid profiles (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL) and beta-carotene levels.

Main Results:

  • Mean total cholesterol was 179.3 mg/dl.
  • Mean LDL was 104.1 mg/dl, with a range of 47-173 mg/dl.
  • Mean HDL was 51.5 mg/dl, indicating favorable levels. Beta-carotene levels were within the normal range.

Conclusions:

  • Total and LDL cholesterol levels in anorexia nervosa are within the normal range.
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels are favorably elevated in anorexia nervosa.
  • Hypercarotenemia is not associated with anorexia nervosa.
