    Summary

Pigeon optic tectum cells respond selectively to moving gratings. Optimal spatial frequencies for these visual neurons range from 0.4 to 0.9 cycles/degree, regardless of stimulus direction or speed.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Visual Neuroscience
    • Sensory Neuroscience

    Context:

    • The optic tectum is a key brain region for processing visual information in birds.
    • Understanding neuronal responses in the optic tectum provides insights into avian visual perception.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the spatial frequency selectivity of extracellularly recorded neurons in the pigeon optic tectum.
    • To determine the optimal spatial frequencies for responses to moving sine-wave gratings.

    Summary:

    • Extracellular recordings were performed on pigeon optic tectum neurons.
    • Neurons exhibited selective responses to moving sine-wave gratings.
    • The optimal spatial frequencies identified were consistently between 0.4 and 0.9 cycles/degree.
    • This selectivity was found to be independent of the direction, orientation, and velocity of the presented gratings.

    Impact:

    • This study characterizes the spatial frequency tuning of optic tectum neurons in pigeons.
    • Findings contribute to the understanding of visual processing mechanisms in avian brains.
    • The results may inform comparative studies of visual systems across different species.
