Clobazam, a 1,5-benzodiazepine, effectively controlled partial status epilepticus in four patients refractory to other drugs. This oral epilepsy treatment was well-tolerated, with seizures resolving within two hours in most cases.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Clobazam is a unique 1,5-benzodiazepine used for epilepsy management.
  • Limited data exists on oral clobazam for status epilepticus, with only one prior study.

Observation:

  • Four patients with EEG-proven partial status epilepticus, refractory to standard treatments, received oral clobazam.
  • A loading dose, approximately double the maintenance dose, was administered.

Findings:

  • Seizure activity was controlled within two hours in three out of four patients.
  • Clobazam was well-tolerated, with no adverse effects reported.
  • Prompt response to oral loading dose observed.

Implications:

  • Oral clobazam shows promise for treating refractory partial status epilepticus.
