A postpartum woman experienced acute myocardial infarction due to coronary artery dissection. Prompt diagnosis and emergency coronary artery bypass grafting led to a successful recovery.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Postpartum women are at increased risk for cardiovascular events.
  • Acute myocardial infarction (MI) in the postpartum period is rare but serious.
  • Coronary artery dissection is a potential cause of MI in this demographic.

Observation:

  • A 34-year-old woman presented 12 weeks postpartum with chest pain.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed acute myocardial infarction.
  • Cardiac catheterization suggested coronary artery dissection.

Findings:

  • Intravascular ultrasonography confirmed spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD).
  • The patient required emergency coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
  • Post-operative recovery was uneventful.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights SCAD as a critical diagnosis in postpartum MI.
  • Early recognition and intervention are crucial for favorable outcomes.
  • Further research into postpartum cardiovascular complications is warranted.
