We developed a new system combining proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) imaging and Light-modulated Electron Spin Resonance (LODESR) imaging. This allows sequential imaging of samples, with only Tempol solutions visible in LODESR images.

Area of Science:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Spectroscopy

Background:

  • Proton NMR imaging and LODESR imaging are powerful techniques for sample analysis.
  • Integrating these methods could offer complementary information.
  • Existing instrumentation may not support simultaneous or sequential acquisition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and construct RF coil assemblies and instrumentation for combined proton NMR and LODESR imaging.
  • To enable sequential image collection from the same sample using both techniques.
  • To demonstrate the feasibility of the integrated system.

Main Methods:

  • Designed a crossed ellipse coil for LODESR and proton NMR detection.
  • Incorporated a saddle coil for Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) excitation.
  • Collected sequential images of phantoms containing copper sulphate and Tempol solutions.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Successfully acquired sequential NMR and LODESR images from the same samples.
  • NMR images were acquired in 4.3 minutes, followed by LODESR data collection (2.5 minutes) within 30 seconds.
  • Only Tempol solutions were detectable in the LODESR images, indicating specificity.

Conclusions:

  • The developed RF coil assemblies and instrumentation effectively combine proton NMR and LODESR imaging.
  • The system allows for rapid, sequential data acquisition.
  • LODESR imaging demonstrates sensitivity to specific radical species like Tempol.
