Summary

Bone marrow transplantation is a successful treatment for severe aplastic anemia. A conditioning regimen of cyclophosphamide and antilymphocyte globulin effectively prevented graft failure in 20 patients.

Background:

  • Severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is a life-threatening hematological disorder with high mortality.
  • Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is the primary treatment for SAA, particularly in younger patients.
  • Pre-transplant transfusions are a significant risk factor for graft failure in SAA patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a conditioning regimen for BMT in patients with SAA.
  • To assess the incidence of graft failure and patient survival after BMT for SAA.
  • To determine if the conditioning regimen is sufficiently myeloablative and immunosuppressive.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 20 patients with SAA underwent BMT.
  • Conditioning regimen consisted of cyclophosphamide combined with antilymphocyte globulin.
