Summary

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is present in diabetic retinopathy tissues, with staining intensity correlating to disease severity. Laser therapy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy reduces VEGF levels, suggesting its role in the condition.

  • To investigate VEGF staining patterns in various stages of diabetic retinopathy.
  • To compare VEGF expression in diabetic preretinal membranes versus non-diabetic membranes.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry was used to detect VEGF (VEGF165 and VEGF121,165,189) in human retinal tissues.
  • Tissues included normal retinas, diabetic retinas at different stages, and excised preretinal membranes.
