Individuals with generalized social phobia (GSPs) show a negative interpretation bias for ambiguous social situations. This bias, particularly for self-relevant scenarios, may contribute to maintaining social phobia.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Cognitive Neuroscience

Background:

  • Generalized social phobia (GSP) is characterized by fear and avoidance of social situations.
  • Cognitive biases are thought to play a role in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether individuals with GSP exhibit a negative interpretation bias for ambiguous social scenarios.
  • To compare this bias in GSP individuals with non-anxious controls (NACs) and individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCDs).

Main Methods:

  • Participants (GSPs, NACs, OCDs) were presented with 22 ambiguous scenarios (15 social, 7 nonsocial).
  • Each scenario had positive, negative, and neutral interpretations.
  • Participants ranked the likelihood of each interpretation for themselves and a typical person.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • GSP individuals preferentially selected negative interpretations for ambiguous social scenarios, unlike NACs and OCDs.
  • This negative interpretation bias was specific to self-relevant social scenarios.
  • The bias was not observed for nonsocial scenarios.

Conclusions:

  • A specific negative interpretation bias for self-relevant social situations may be a key cognitive mechanism in generalized social phobia.
  • This finding supports cognitive models of social phobia maintenance.
  • Targeting interpretation biases could be a therapeutic strategy for GSP.
