  • Trauma Studies
  • Primary Care Medicine

Background:

  • Sexual abuse is prevalent among female primary care patients.
  • Long-term consequences range from mild to complex posttraumatic stress symptoms.
  • Complex symptoms often arise from severe, chronic childhood abuse, potentially involving family violence and substance abuse.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate empirical evidence for complex posttraumatic stress syndrome.
  • To examine this syndrome in female primary care patients with a history of sexual abuse.

Main Methods:

  • A structured interview was used to collect data.
  • Data included family history and psychiatric symptoms/diagnoses.
  • Cluster analysis was applied to the data from 99 women patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Cluster analysis provided empirical support for a complex posttraumatic syndrome.
  • A severity gradient was observed.
  • Symptom severity paralleled childhood abuse severity and family sociopathic behavior/violence.

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the existence of complex posttraumatic stress syndrome.
  • The study links symptom patterns to severe childhood sexual abuse and adverse family environments.
