Summary

Psychosis can be linked to endocrine disorders like hypopituitarism. Two patients with hypopituitarism experienced psychosis that resolved with hormone replacement therapy.

Background:

  • Psychiatric disturbances, including psychosis, can arise from endocrine abnormalities.
  • Previous literature on psychosis associated with hypopituitarism is limited and often describes symptoms as delirium.

Observation:

  • Two patients with hypopituitarism presented with psychotic symptoms without altered consciousness.
  • Initial psychiatric evaluations suggested functional diagnoses for these patients.

Findings:

  • The psychotic symptoms in both patients resolved after treatment for their underlying hypopituitarism.
  • This suggests a direct link between hormonal deficiencies and psychosis in these cases.

Implications:

  • Hypopituitarism should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unexplained psychosis.
  • Correction of hormonal imbalances may effectively treat psychosis in affected individuals.
