Summary

High plexus visibility may indicate a predisposition to schizophrenia. This study found increased plexus visibility in individuals with schizotypal traits, but not in controls, suggesting a potential biological marker for schizophrenia risk.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroimaging and Psychiatry
  • Biological markers of mental health

Background:

  • Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder with potential biological underpinnings.
  • High plexus visibility has been proposed as a potential biological marker for schizophrenia diathesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between high plexus visibility and schizotypal traits in a college student population.
  • To determine if plexus visibility can serve as a biological marker for schizophrenia predisposition.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed plexus visibility in college students.
  • Compared visibility between individuals endorsing schizotypal traits (n=160) and normal controls (n=99).

Main Results:

  • High plexus visibility was observed in 22 (14%) of individuals with schizotypal traits.

Related Experiment Videos

  • None of the control participants (n=99) exhibited high plexus visibility.
  • Conclusions:

    • The findings support an association between increased plexus visibility and schizotypy.
    • High plexus visibility may represent a potential biological marker for schizophrenia risk.
