Summary

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is linked to gastro-duodenal diseases and gastric cancer. Effective triple therapy eradicates H. pylori in 90% of cases, but antibiotic resistance is a growing concern.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is strongly associated with gastro-duodenal diseases.
  • Persistent H. pylori colonization can be modeled in Japanese monkeys, which develop gastritis similar to humans.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review diagnostic methods for H. pylori detection.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of a new triple therapy regimen for H. pylori eradication.
  • To discuss the emerging issue of antibiotic-resistant H. pylori strains and their implications.

Main Methods:

  • Review of diagnostic techniques including C-urea breath tests, rapid urea test, histological examination, and culture.
  • Analysis of data on a triple therapy regimen (proton pump inhibitor plus two antibiotics) for H. pylori eradication.
  • Examination of reported prevalence of antibiotic-resistant H. pylori strains worldwide.

Main Results:

  • Triple therapy achieves high H. pylori eradication rates (90%) with minimal side effects.
  • Eradication of H. pylori significantly reduces peptic ulcer recurrence.
  • Worldwide increase in antibiotic-resistant H. pylori strains has been reported, often following failed eradication attempts.

Conclusions:

  • H. pylori eradication is crucial for managing peptic ulcer disease.
  • While effective, triple therapy faces challenges from rising antibiotic resistance.
  • Further research is needed to understand the link between H. pylori infection and gastric cancer.
