Background:

  • Carica papaya (CP) cultivation is widespread globally.
  • CP pollen allergy remains undescribed despite extensive cultivation.

Observation:

  • Patients presented with symptoms of seasonal rhinoconjunctivitis or bronchial asthma linked to CP tree exposure.
  • Skin prick tests (SPTs) and specific IgE levels indicated hypersensitivity to papaya fruit and papain.

Findings:

  • An IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to CP pollen extract was confirmed in all six patients via SPTs, IgE tests, and conjunctival challenge tests.
  • Cross-reactivity between CP pollen, papaya fruit, and papain allergens was established through RAST inhibition studies.
  • Control subjects showed no allergic reactions to CP pollen extract.
