Summary

A patient with multiple sclerosis experienced intractable hiccups and syncope. The lesion causing these symptoms was in the cervical cord, a first for multiple sclerosis cases.

Background:

  • This represents the first reported case of MS-associated intractable hiccups and syncope originating from a cervical cord lesion.
  • The syncopal episodes were hypothesized to share a pathophysiological mechanism with cough syncope.

  • This case expands the understanding of lesion localization for specific MS symptoms.
  • It suggests that cervical cord lesions, not just medullary ones, can precipitate intractable hiccups and syncope in MS.
  • Further research may elucidate the precise neuroanatomical pathways involved.
