Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Radiology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Atlantooccipital pneumatization is a rare condition.
  • Mastoid pneumocele can present as a palpable mass.

Observation:

  • A 49-year-old woman presented with a palpable occipital mass.
  • Radiographs and CT scans showed extensive atlantooccipital pneumatization.

Findings:

  • The condition was diagnosed as mastoid pneumocele.
  • Myringotomy tube placement resulted in prompt symptomatic relief.
  • Follow-up CT revealed opacification and new bone formation in pneumatized areas.

Implications:

  • Myringotomy tube insertion is an effective treatment for symptomatic atlantooccipital pneumatization.
