Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Sexual Medicine
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Sexual problems and emotional issues frequently co-occur.
  • Libido changes are common and may represent a core issue in sexual dysfunction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of sexual problems in a general population cohort.
  • To examine the relationship between depression, its treatments, and sexual problems.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study of 591 individuals from the Zurich Cohort Study.
  • Data collected through five interviews between ages 20-35, focusing on sexual and emotional health.
  • Prevalence of sexual problems compared across normal subjects, non-treated depressed patients, and treated depressed patients.

Main Results:

  • Sexual problems were present in 26% of normal subjects, 45% of non-treated depressed patients, and 63% of treated depressed patients.
  • Treated depressed patients showed increased sexual dysfunction and emotional problems, but libido levels remained unaffected.
  • No significant difference in sexual problem prevalence was observed between medication and psychotherapy treatments for depression.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual dysfunction and emotional problems are closely linked, often associated with libido changes.
  • Depression treatment, particularly in treated depressed patients, is associated with a higher incidence of sexual dysfunction and emotional problems.
  • Current depression treatments do not appear to differentially affect the prevalence of sexual problems.
