Summary

This study found no significant performance differences between the Oticon DigiFocus and Widex Senso digital hearing aids. Objective and subjective tests revealed similar hearing aid benefit, with neither device proving superior.

  • Different design philosophies and fitting strategies exist among digital hearing aid manufacturers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the real and perceived benefits of two digital hearing aids: Oticon DigiFocus and Widex Senso.
  • To investigate potential performance differences due to distinct design and fitting approaches.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty subjects with sensorineural hearing loss were fitted with both hearing aids.
  • Objective (speech recognition) and subjective (self-report) tests were conducted after 4 weeks of use for each device.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in speech recognition or self-reported benefit were found between the Oticon DigiFocus and Widex Senso.
  • Real ear measurements indicated higher high-frequency gain in the DigiFocus, which was perceived as "harshness" by some users.
  • The Widex Senso was preferred by a majority of subjects, particularly new hearing aid users.

Conclusions:

  • Neither the Oticon DigiFocus nor the Widex Senso digital hearing aid demonstrated superiority in overall benefit.
  • Objective hearing aid benefit was minimal in the presence of background noise for both devices.
