Summary

High flow priapism, often from trauma, requires different treatment than low flow priapism. Angioradiologic procedures like selective embolization are effective for this rare condition.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Radiology
  • Pediatric Surgery

Background:

  • High flow priapism is a rare condition, typically resulting from genito-perineal trauma.
  • Diagnosis relies on patient history, blood gas analysis of the corpora cavernosa, and Doppler ultrasound.
  • Management differs significantly from low flow priapism.

Observation:

  • A 10-year-old patient presented with high flow priapism.
  • The condition followed a traumatic injury.

Findings:

  • Selective arteriography of the internal pudendal artery identified the arterial lesion.
  • Supraselective embolization of the lacerated cavernous artery was performed.
  • This angioradiologic intervention successfully resolved the priapism.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Angioradiologic procedures, specifically supraselective embolization, represent a primary treatment option for high flow priapism.
  • This minimally invasive approach offers a successful resolution for pediatric cases.
  • Highlights the importance of advanced imaging and interventional techniques in managing traumatic priapism.
