    Background:

    • Emphysema is a lung disease characterized by destruction of alveoli.
    • Quantifying emphysema's impact on lung structure is crucial for understanding disease progression.
    • Traditional morphometric measures may not fully capture the physical property changes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between lung surface area and emphysema extent/type.
    • To evaluate specific surface area as a metric for emphysema assessment.
    • To explore the morphologic origins of different emphysema types.

    Main Methods:

    • Autopsy examination of 69 male lungs.
    • Measurement of internal surface area per unit lung volume (specific surface area).
    • Correlation analysis between emphysema percentage, lung volume, and specific surface area.

    Main Results:

    • Specific surface area significantly decreased with increasing emphysema percentage (r=-0.574).
    • Lungs with minimal emphysema showed reduced specific surface area compared to healthy lungs.
