Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Critical Care

Background:

  • Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe pulmonary complication.
  • ARDS following pneumonectomy is uncommon yet frequently lethal.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the pathogenesis of ARDS after pneumonectomy.
  • To identify potential contributing factors to this complication.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of ARDS post-pneumonectomy.
  • Analysis of proposed etiological factors.

Main Results:

  • The precise etiology of ARDS post-pneumonectomy is not definitively established.
  • Several factors are implicated in its pathogenesis.

Conclusions:

  • Understanding the pathogenesis of ARDS after pneumonectomy is crucial.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the exact causes and develop preventative strategies.
