Inverse ratio ventilation improved gas exchange in an animal model of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, allowing intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) diminished these benefits, suggesting it is not equivalent to other methods of increasing mean airway pressure.
