Summary

A child with left cerebellar injury experienced significant cognitive deficits, particularly in linguistic processing. This case study supports the cerebellum's crucial role in cognitive functions, especially language.

Background:

  • The cerebellum, traditionally linked to motor control, is increasingly recognized for its role in cognitive functions.
  • Understanding the cerebellum's contribution to cognition is vital for diagnosing and treating neurological disorders.

Observation:

  • A child (L.C.) with focal left cerebellar injury presented with aphasia and dysarthria.
  • Neuropsychological testing revealed persistent psychomotor slowing and executive function deficits 3 and 9 months post-injury.
  • Cognitive testing at 13 and 16 months showed significantly slowed information processing in both linguistic and nonlinguistic domains compared to controls.

Findings:

  • Linguistic information processing was over twice as slow as controls.
  • Nonlinguistic information processing was approximately 20% slower than controls.
