Inverse correlation between serum testosterone and leptin in men

Summary

Testosterone suppresses leptin production in men. Studies show an inverse correlation between testosterone and leptin levels, with testosterone administration lowering circulating leptin.

Background:

Leptin regulates energy balance and links energy stores to reproduction.
Gender differences in leptin levels are not solely explained by body fat variations.
The relationship between testosterone and leptin requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between endogenous testosterone and serum leptin concentrations in elderly men.
To determine if exogenous testosterone administration affects leptin production.

Main Methods:

Serum leptin and testosterone levels were measured in 269 elderly men.
Serum leptin levels were monitored in 10 healthy men during a 12-month testosterone enanthate treatment.
Statistical analysis included body mass index and plasma insulin.

Main Results:

A significant inverse correlation (r = -0.39) was observed between serum leptin and testosterone in elderly men, persisting after controlling for BMI and insulin.
Testosterone administration in healthy men suppressed serum leptin levels from 3.4 ± 1.4 to 1.9 ± 0.6 µg/L.
Leptin levels returned to baseline after testosterone treatment cessation.

Conclusions:

Testosterone exerts a suppressive effect on leptin production.
Circulating leptin levels are inversely influenced by testosterone concentrations in men.
