This study reports a rare case of primary malignant melanoma of the respiratory tract in a 53-year-old man. The patient underwent extensive surgery and is tumor-free after 10 months.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Malignant melanoma is rare in the respiratory tract.
  • Primary lung melanoma lacks a history of cutaneous or ocular lesions.

Observation:

  • A 53-year-old man presented with a melanotic lung tumor obstructing the left main bronchus.
  • Initial laser therapy was followed by left lobectomy with sleeve resection.
  • Post-operative complications necessitated further lung resection and thoracoplasty.

Findings:

  • Histological and immunohistochemical analyses confirmed the tumor as malignant melanoma.
  • No evidence of primary cutaneous, mucous membrane, or ocular melanoma was found.
  • This case represents one of only 21 confirmed primary respiratory tract melanomas.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses like primary lung melanoma.
  • Demonstrates the potential for surgical management of advanced respiratory tract melanoma.
  • Suggests that primary respiratory tract melanoma can occur without a history of other melanoma sites.
