Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular imaging
  • Medical ultrasonography
  • Signal processing

Background:

  • Doppler echocardiography is crucial for assessing cardiac function.
  • Current methods utilize short-time Fourier spectrograms (STFTs) to visualize blood flow.
  • STFTs have limitations in displaying complex velocity patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and evaluate the Gabor transform for Doppler echocardiography.
  • To compare Gabor spectrograms with traditional STFT displays.
  • To demonstrate the potential of Gabor analysis for improved pathological assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Description of Gabor transform and spectrogram evaluation techniques.
  • Comparative analysis of ultrasound machine displays using PC-based STFT and Gabor methods.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Application to two patient cases with pathological significance.
  • Main Results:

    • Gabor spectrograms offer a more detailed display of blood velocity patterns compared to STFTs.
    • Comparative analysis supports the advantages of the Gabor display.
    • The Gabor transform aids in inferring clinically relevant functional parameters.

    Conclusions:

    • The Gabor transform presents a promising advancement over STFTs in Doppler echocardiography.
    • Gabor spectrograms enhance the visualization and interpretation of cardiac blood flow.
    • This technique may lead to more accurate diagnosis of cardiac pathologies.
