Summary

This study shows an atrial defibrillator effectively treats atrial fibrillation (AF) resistant to medication. The device reduced prolonged AF episodes in two patients without adverse effects, indicating promise for this non-pharmacological therapy.

Background:

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia requiring effective treatments.

Observation:

  • A novel atrial defibrillator was evaluated in two patients with paroxysmal AF.
  • The device was implanted with electrodes in the coronary sinus, right atrium, and right ventricle.
  • The defibrillator operated in a physician-activated mode, delivering shocks synchronized with the R wave.
  • Ventricular pacing was employed to manage post-shock pauses.

  • The atrial defibrillator effectively reduced prolonged AF episodes in both patients over 7 and 12 months.
