Summary

Chronic alcohol consumption may cause subclinical heart damage, detectable through electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities like late ventricular potentials (LP). These findings correlate with liver disease severity in alcoholics.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Hepatology
  • Internal Medicine

Context:

  • Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of mortality in chronic alcoholics.
  • Alcohol's pro-arrhythmogenic effects and subclinical myocardial damage are implicated.
  • This study investigates cardiac and hepatic changes in chronic alcoholics without acute episodes.

Purpose:

  • To prospectively investigate cardiac abnormalities, specifically late ventricular potentials (LP), in chronic alcoholics.
  • To correlate these cardiac findings with the quantity of alcohol consumed and liver disease indicators.
  • To explore the relationship between LP and biological markers of liver damage.

Summary:

  • 41 chronic alcoholics underwent cardiac assessments (ECG, signal averaging, echocardiography, Holter) and liver biopsy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Late ventricular potentials (LP) were found in 30% of patients.
  • LP correlated with alcohol intake duration, fatty liver infiltration, and elevated liver enzymes (GGT, ASAT, ALAT).
  • Impact:

    • ECG abnormalities may indicate early, subclinical myocardial lesions in chronic alcoholics.
    • These lesions might stem from metabolic disturbances similar to those causing fatty liver changes.
    • The prognostic significance of these signal-averaged ECG abnormalities requires further investigation.
