Summary

Older truck drivers generally maintain good visual function. However, regular visual acuity checks are crucial for professional driver licensing to ensure safety on the road.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Occupational Health
  • Optometry

Background:

  • Professional truck drivers require specific visual capabilities for safe operation.
  • Age-related changes in vision can potentially impact job performance and safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the visual function of working-age professional truck drivers.
  • To determine if older drivers exhibit visual deficits necessitating modified work duties.

Main Methods:

  • 100 professional truck drivers were invited, with 77 participating (74 male, 3 female, aged 30-66).
  • Comprehensive eye examinations included visual acuity, visual fields, dark adaptation, contrast sensitivity, color vision, and glare sensitivity testing.

Main Results:

  • Most drivers had normal visual fields, dark adaptation, contrast sensitivity, and glare sensitivity.
  • Five drivers (6.5%) had visual acuity below the professional license requirement.
  • Minor visual issues found included incipient cataracts, fundus abnormalities, strabismus, amblyopia, and color vision defects.

Conclusions:

  • Age alone does not necessitate less demanding duties for truck drivers due to visual function.
  • A significant number of drivers failed to meet visual acuity standards for licensing.
  • More frequent visual acuity screenings are recommended for professional driver license renewal.
