Good lung function, measured by forced expiratory volume (FEV1), is linked to better fluid intelligence in older adults. Both genetics and environment contribute to this association over time.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate genetic and environmental factors in the longitudinal association between pulmonary function and cognitive performance.
  • To examine how forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) predicts cognitive performance over six years.

Main Methods:

  • A 6-year longitudinal study of 222 Swedish twin pairs (mean age 62.3 years).
  • Hierarchical multiple regression analyses predicted cognitive performance (fluid and crystallized intelligence) from FEV1.
  • Bivariate cross-twin correlations assessed genetic and environmental contributions.
