Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and types of multiple primary malignancies in patients diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma.
  • To assess if patients with renal cell carcinoma have an elevated risk of developing a second primary malignancy.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 551 patients who underwent surgery for renal cell carcinoma between 1989 and 1997 was analyzed.
  • The occurrence of other primary malignancies was categorized as antecedent, synchronous, or subsequent.
  • Observed subsequent malignancies were compared to expected rates using US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data and Poisson testing.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 26.9% of patients had at least one other primary malignancy.
  • The most common other malignancies included breast, prostate, colorectal, and bladder cancers, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
  • Men with renal cell carcinoma showed a significantly increased risk of subsequent bladder cancer (SIR 4.3, p=0.0067).

Conclusions:

  • Breast, prostate, colorectal, bladder cancers, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are the most frequently observed secondary malignancies in renal cell carcinoma patients.
  • Men diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma exhibit a higher risk for developing bladder cancer later in life.
