Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the degree of pineal calcification (DOC) and subjective sleep disturbances.
  • To explore the potential link between pineal calcification and daytime tiredness.

Main Methods:

  • Cranial computed tomography (cCT) was used to classify DOC into seven grades.
  • A sleep questionnaire assessed chronic subjective sleep-related disturbances in 36 patients.
  • Logistic regression models analyzed the correlation between DOC, age, sex, and sleep parameters.

  • Higher pineal DOC was significantly associated with increased daytime tiredness (OR = 4.15).
  • Increased pineal DOC also correlated with a higher likelihood of sleep disturbance (OR = 1.74).

  • The findings support the hypothesis that increased pineal calcification may reduce melatonin production.
  • This reduction in melatonin could lead to disrupted circadian rhythmicity and sleep-wake cycle disturbances.
  • Daytime tiredness appears to be a primary symptom associated with higher pineal DOC.
