Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Colonic ischemia is a spectrum of large bowel injury, common in the elderly.
  • It can mimic inflammatory bowel disease and neoplasms.
  • Clinical presentation often involves abdominal pain and hematochezia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical spectrum, diagnosis, and management of colonic ischemia.
  • To highlight the importance of early recognition and prompt management.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical presentation, diagnostic considerations, and management strategies.
  • Discussion of prognostic factors and potential complications.

Main Results:

  • Most patients experience reversible disease with expectant management and supportive care.
  • A minority develop irreversible injury, such as strictures or chronic colitis.
  • Favorable prognosis is typical, contingent on timely diagnosis and follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • High clinical suspicion, early diagnosis, and careful follow-up are crucial for managing colonic ischemia.
  • Prompt recognition of persistent or complicated disease is essential for optimal patient outcomes.
