Summary

Intra-arterial 5-fluorodeoxyuridine (FUDR) after hepatic cryotherapy for liver tumors led to biloma complications in three patients. This complication was not observed with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), suggesting FUDR should be avoided post-cryotherapy.

Background:

  • Hepatic cryotherapy is a cytodestructive treatment for unresectable liver tumors.
  • Regional chemotherapy can be combined with hepatic cryotherapy.
  • 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was initially used intra-arterially post-cryotherapy, but arterial toxicity led to a switch to 5-fluorodeoxyuridine (FUDR).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate complications associated with intra-arterial chemotherapy following hepatic cryotherapy.
  • To compare the safety profiles of 5-FU and FUDR when administered intra-arterially after hepatic cryotherapy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case note study of 130 patients undergoing hepatic cryotherapy and regional chemotherapy.
  • Patients received either intra-arterial 5-FU (n=123) or FUDR (n=7) post-cryotherapy.
