Summary

Pregnancy Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is rare with poor outcomes. Combination chemotherapy alongside surgery offers a promising treatment approach for pregnant patients with BL.

Background:

  • Burkitt lymphoma (BL) during pregnancy is exceptionally rare, historically associated with poor maternal and fetal outcomes.
  • Previous treatment strategies were suboptimal, with many patients receiving inadequate single-agent chemotherapy or no chemotherapy at all.

Observation:

  • A case of a pregnant patient diagnosed with BL at 11 6/7 weeks' gestation was managed.
  • The treatment involved surgical resection of visible tumor followed by combination cytotoxic chemotherapy.

Findings:

  • The patient achieved a disease-free status one year post-diagnosis and treatment.
  • This case demonstrates the potential efficacy of aggressive treatment in a rare obstetric complication.

Implications:

  • Immediate combination cytotoxic chemotherapy, in conjunction with surgical intervention, is indicated for pregnant patients diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma.
  • This approach may significantly improve outcomes for this high-risk obstetric patient population.
