Area of Science:

  • Medical Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology

Background:

  • Pulmonary cryptococcosis is uncommon in immunocompetent individuals, particularly during pregnancy.
  • Limited data exists on the prognosis and management of this condition in pregnant women.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old woman diagnosed with isolated pulmonary cryptococcosis postpartum.
  • The patient delivered a healthy infant without evidence of maternal-fetal transmission.
  • The condition was managed with fluconazole, a triazole antifungal agent.

Findings:

  • Radiologic, clinical, and serologic resolution was achieved following fluconazole treatment.
  • Pulmonary cryptococcosis can mimic other serious conditions like septic pulmonary emboli or choriocarcinoma.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Triazole antifungal therapy demonstrated favorable outcomes in this rare case.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the successful management of pulmonary cryptococcosis in an immunocompetent parturient host.
    • It underscores the efficacy of fluconazole in treating this rare fungal infection during the postpartum period.
    • Early diagnosis and appropriate antifungal therapy are crucial for favorable outcomes.
