Background:

  • Transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMLR) is used for end-stage coronary artery disease.
  • Evidence supports TMLR for angina relief and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if TMLR improves myocardial function in chronically ischemic tissue.
  • To investigate the effects of TMLR on contractile function in a preclinical model.

Main Methods:

  • Domestic pigs (n=8) with chronic ischemia induced by Ameroid occlusion underwent TMLR.
  • Echocardiography assessed segmental contraction at rest and during dobutamine stress.
  • Treated myocardium was compared to remote and sham-treated control myocardium (n=4).
