Summary

Viewing solar eclipses, even with basic protection, can cause lasting vision damage. Many patients experienced persistent central vision loss (scotoma) despite initial visual acuity improvements.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Imaging
  • Visual Function Testing

Context:

  • Solar retinopathy is a condition resulting from viewing the sun directly.
  • This study evaluates patients who observed the 1996 solar eclipse.

Purpose:

  • To clinically evaluate patients who sustained retinal damage from viewing a solar eclipse.
  • To assess visual acuity, visual fields, and fundus appearance post-eclipse exposure.

Summary:

  • Twenty-one patients (33 eyes) were evaluated after viewing a solar eclipse.
  • All patients presented with central scotoma and reduced visual acuity, with some improvement via head tilt.
  • Follow-up revealed persistent visual deficits in many patients, indicating potential irreversible retinal damage.

Impact:

  • Direct solar observation, even with inadequate protection, can lead to permanent visual impairment.
  • Complete visual acuity recovery does not preclude the presence of functional vision deficits like central scotoma.
