Summary

Simian virus 40 (SV40) oncogenicity in hamsters depends on inoculation route. Different injection methods lead to specific tumor types, including mesotheliomas, osteosarcomas, sarcomas, lymphomas, and ependymomas, all containing SV40.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Virology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Simian virus 40 (SV40) is a DNA tumor virus known for its high oncogenicity in hamsters.
  • Tumor development in SV40-infected hamsters is histologically specific and influenced by the route of viral inoculation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between the route of Simian virus 40 (SV40) inoculation and the resulting tumor types in hamsters.
  • To confirm the presence of SV40 in the induced tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Systemic inoculation of hamsters with SV40.
  • Subcutaneous inoculation of hamsters with SV40.
  • Intracranial inoculation of hamsters with SV40.
  • Histological examination of tumor types.
  • Detection of SV40 within developed tumors.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Systemic SV40 inoculation resulted in mesotheliomas, osteosarcomas, sarcomas, and lymphomas within six months.
  • Subcutaneous SV40 injection led to sarcomas at the injection site.
  • Intracranial SV40 administration induced ependymomas.
  • SV40 was detected in all investigated tumor types.

Conclusions:

  • The route of Simian virus 40 (SV40) inoculation is a critical determinant of the specific tumor types that develop in hamsters.
  • SV40 is oncogenic and can induce a range of distinct tumors depending on the administration pathway.
  • The findings confirm the causal link between SV40 and specific hamster tumor histologies.
