Background:

  • Rectal tumors, including adenocarcinoma and adenomas, pose treatment challenges, especially in elderly patients with poor medical conditions.
  • Radical surgery or colostomy may not be feasible for all patients with rectal tumors due to age or comorbidities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoluminal radiotherapy for local tumor control in patients with rectal tumors.
  • To assess side effects associated with endoluminal radiotherapy in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 12 patients with adenocarcinoma and 10 with villous/adenovillous adenomas received endoluminal radiotherapy with curative intent.
  • Treatment was administered between 1989 and 1995, focusing on patients unable to undergo conventional surgery.

Main Results:

  • Local tumor control was achieved, with a small number of patients requiring secondary treatment (surgery or iridium implant) for residual tumor.
  • Two patients with adenomas experienced local relapse after initial treatment.
  • No serious adverse side effects were reported during the study period.

Conclusions:

  • Endoluminal radiotherapy is an effective treatment for achieving local tumor control in patients with malignant or premalignant rectal tumors.
