Area of Science:

  • Craniofacial anomalies
  • Congenital malformations
  • Otorhinolaryngology

Background:

  • Midline upper lip sinuses are rare congenital anomalies, with fewer than 25 cases previously reported.
  • Congenital midline cleft lip is a rare condition, and its association with upper lip sinuses is exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • This report details a case of a 16-year-old boy presenting with median cleft lip and associated midline upper lip sinuses.
  • The coexistence of these two rare conditions prompted an investigation into their potential relationship.

Findings:

  • The study explores the controversial link between midline cleft lip and midline upper lip sinuses.
  • Evidence is presented to support the plausibility of a cause-and-effect relationship, suggesting midline clefts may lead to sinus formation.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Understanding the relationship between midline cleft lip and upper lip sinuses can aid in diagnosis and management.
  • This finding may contribute to a better understanding of craniofacial development and associated anomalies.
