    Background:

    • The paired abdominal cerci of Acheta domesticus are crucial mechanosensory appendages that readily regenerate after larval amputation.
    • These cerci possess peripherally located sense cells whose axons form a purely sensory nerve projecting to the terminal abdominal ganglion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate factors guiding regenerating sensory nerves to their correct central terminations.
    • To explore the potential role of attracting substances released by supernumerary ganglia in nerve regeneration.

    Main Methods:

    • Surgical implantation of homologous, supernumerary terminal ganglia into cricket larvae.
    • Amputation of host cerci followed by various surgical manipulations (e.g., nerve sectioning, ganglion wounding).
    • Histological analysis or cobalt chloride filling of regenerated nerves post-adult molt.

    Main Results:

    • Regenerated afferent nerves generally bypassed implants, terminating in the host terminal ganglion, except in specific surgical conditions.
    • In one procedure, some regenerated axons connected with the implant while most still reached the host ganglion.
    • No clear evidence of a trophic influence from the central nervous system was found.

    Conclusions:

    • Regenerating cercal afferents may facultatively utilize the cercal motor nerve as a pathway guide.
    • Further research is needed to fully elucidate the mechanisms governing precise nerve regeneration and target recognition.
