    Summary

    Healthy coiled bodies, structures attached to nucleoli in hamster facial motor neurons, were observed across postnatal development and after axotomy. These structures showed no structural changes due to age or injury.

    Background:

    • Coiled bodies are distinct structures observed in neuronal nucleoli.
    • Their presence and morphology in facial motor neurons during development and after injury are not well-characterized.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and morphology of coiled bodies in golden hamster facial motor neurons.
    • To determine if coiled bodies change structurally with neuronal maturation or experimental axotomy.

    Main Methods:

    • Light microscopy was used to examine golden hamster facial motor neurons.
    • Neurons were analyzed at various postnatal ages (15, 19, 24 days, adult).
    • Axotomized neurons were analyzed 4 days post-surgery.

    Main Results:

    • Coiled bodies were consistently observed attached to the nucleolar periphery via fibrillar material.
    • These structures were present in normal and axotomized neurons across all developmental stages examined.
    • No structural alterations in coiled bodies were linked to developmental age or experimental axotomy.

    • Their structure is resilient to developmental changes and acute axonal injury.
